BIO

Jeremy Marks is an educator and orchestral trombonist based in northwest Ohio. He begins serving as the Assistant Professor of Trombone at Bowling Green State University in Fall 2024. As an educator, he has held positions at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Louisiana at Monroe, Blinn College (TX), and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He is a former Trombone Teaching Assistant at The University of Texas at Austin. His students have earned honors at local, state, regional, and national levels, and have continued graduate studies at competitive music programs. Students have also participated in the Santa Fe Trombone Summit (Southwest Trombone Conference), the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, and the Bar Harbor Brass Festival.

Jeremy's versatile freelancing career on tenor and bass trombone have afforded opportunities to perform with the Charlotte Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, Winston Salem Symphony, Augusta Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Charleston Symphony, Baton Rouge Symphony, and numerous regional orchestras. His doubling credits on bass trumpet and euphonium have been with Austin Symphony and Canton Symphony orchestras.  Respectively, Jeremy has held tenor and bass trombone positions with the Asheville Symphony, Western Piedmont Symphony, Monroe Symphony, Sherman Symphony,  Brazos Valley Symphony, North Carolina Brass Band, and a one-year interim with Opera Carolina.

An avid chamber musician, Jeremy is a member of the Northside Trombone Quartet, winners of the 2013 International Trombone Association Quartet Competition. He serves as the Artistic Director of the Carolina Trombone Project, a professional trombone choir of musicians from North Carolina and South Carolina that champions new, accessible trombone ensemble repertoire. CTP's debut album, Mountain Ascent was released in February 2023 through Albany Records. Mountain Ascent has been critically acclaimed by numerous publications, including the International Trombone Association Journal. Jeremy also recorded Scenes from the Bayou (2019) with the Black Bayou Brass through Mark Customs record label.

Jeremy has performed and presented at the International Trombone Festival, the American Trombone Workshop, the International Women's Brass Conference, the Big XII Trombone Conference, the North Carolina Trombone Festival, and numerous local and state conferences. He has served as an adjudicator for several solo competitions, and has been published by the International Trombone Association Journal. He has previously served as the I.T.A.'s Web Assistant and was a representative of the T.A.P.A.S. Project. Jeremy is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, serving as a university faculty advisor. He is a former chapter president of Iota Omicron, at Bowling Green State University. He is an S.E. Shires Trombone Artist and exclusively plays Greg Black Mouthpieces

An avid DIYer, Jeremy enjoys home projects, distance running, camping, golf, and spending time with his wife, Liz, and three children, Zach, Charlotte, and Autumn.

The University of Texas at Austin

Jeremy studied under Dr. Nathaniel Brickens, Professor of Trombone at The University of Texas at Austin and recipient of the International Trombone Association's Humfield Teaching Excellence Award. Jeremy served as the Trombone Teaching Assistant, 2012-2013, performing with the graduate brass quintet and serving as Assistant Director of the renown, UT Trombone Choir. Jeremy's dissertation, The Orchestral Trombonist's Guide to the Bass Trumpet and Its Excerpts, surveys orchestral repertoire that provides context score analysis, pedagogical approaches, and recommended fundamental exercises to the bass trumpet. This study also provides clef recommendations with respect to the instrument's need to transpose.

Jeremy studied under Dr. Steve Wolfinbarger, Professor of Trombone and recipient of the International Trombone Association Award. Jeremy developed doubling skills on tenor and bass trombone, while serving as a library assistant for the WMU Music Library.

Jeremy studied under Dr. William Mathis, former Professor of Trombone at BGSU, as well as Garth Simmons, principal trombonist of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra.
